Evolution
In our study of evolution, we look at the natural history of the earth, from the appearance of the first single-celled organisms during the pre-Cambrian Period, to the development of Homo Sapiens Sapiens in the late Cenozoic Era.
Students learn about the major periods of the evolutionary story, and their most significant developments: from the beginnings of life in the seas and on land during the Cenozic Era, through the appearance of reptiles and dinosaurs in the Mesozoic, to the rise of mammals in the early Cenozoic, and the appearance of the earliest human cultures one hundred thousand years ago.
Evolution Web Sites
Students worked in development teams to build a web site portraying one of the major periods in evolutionary history. Each team was required to choose a period, then create a pages using words and graphics to describe:
1) the most significant characteristics of their chosen period, including the climate and the position of the continents; 2) the animal species that arose and those that became extinct; 3) the evolving plant life; and 4) a bibliography page that credited the images and source material they used from the web.
Here are some samples of their work.
Brendan & Chris's Cretaceous Period
Sonia & Casey's Permian Period
John & Patrick's Devonian Period
Allie & Caitlin's Jurassic Period
